Snapshots from out west

A week ago Saturday, we began the long trek out to South Dakota. This is our happy little traveler at the beginning of the very long car ride. We drove it in two days which was a good thing. Brady did really well as long as he had his wooden spoon in hand!

On our way out we stopped at both the Corn Palace and at Wall Drug. They were just as I expected they would be...now I can say that I have been there I guess. At Wall Drug we took the opportunity of the stop to let Brady get out of the car for a bit. We checked out the backyard and found this lovely saddle for a photo.

We arrived to the Aspen Ridge houses on Sunday night. We were greeted by all of Andy's mom's side of the family. All of Andy's grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, everyones spouses and their children all stayed in two beautiful houses in the Black Hills for the week. This included travelers from the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Montana.
Needless to say, since we were all together we decided to have Christmas in July. We made the traditional Christmas dinner of egg bakes and sweet rolls and had a gift exchange. This is Brady opening up his Diego truck from Lucas. He was very excited about his truck. It was fun for us to watch him open this, because it was the first present that he has opened that he didn't just care about the wrapping paper!

Brady also had fun playing in the tissue paper from Andy's gift!

A family photo in the Black Hills.

Wednesday, the whole crew loaded up and headed to Mount Rushmore. We had a great time there and really enjoyed seeing the new visitors center and the sculpters studio. It's hard to believe it from the beautiful blue sky in the picture, but it did rain and hail on us that day while we were there. Good thing we took our photos early!

The same afternoon we headed to see Crazy Horse. I haven't been there for almost 15 years so it was fun to see the progress they have made. Andy and Brady found a fountain to play in while we were there. Do you think Brady had fun!?

That evening for dinner we went to a Red Lobster. Brady was so excited about this wooden fish that he found. I had to laugh when this happened because my sister Jen makes it her mission to find some bizarre thing to kiss on every family vacation and to take a picture of her smooch. Well Jen, it looks like Brady took care of it on this one for us!

Thursday we took a drive through Spearfish Canyon. It was gorgeous! This picture of Bridal Veil Falls is my favorite - isn't God's creation amazing!

Brady and Levi brought the same shirt out west so we had to get picture of the boys in their matching outfits. This is a pretty serious picture for these two clowns!

Thursday evening the grandparents gave us the night out. All of Andy's cousins and spouses went out for the evening in Deadwood, while they watched the kids. We played a few penny slots at one of the casinos and then found a band where we sang and danced the night away.
It was a great time!

Friday we went to Bear Country. This was one of our favorite things that we did on the trip. Bear Country is a huge wildlife park that you drive through. The animals are in their natural habitat, so it's kind of like a drive through zoo. Amazing....we saw elk, reindeer, mountain goats, a ton of bears, and lots more. At the end of the drive, they have walking exhibits outside for you to see the smaller animals like fox, badgers, and the baby bears. Brady LOVED watching all the animals and giggled lots at the baby bears playing in the trees and with one another.

Here is our tired, but mostly happy little one on the way home. It tooks lots of toys, reading of books, and singing of song to make it home, but we made. It was a great trip!

Where in South Dakota is Brady?

Well, Andy's original plan for the week could not happen. When we arrived at our place in South Dakota we found out that we had not internet for the week. Bummer, because Andy wanted to post each day a photo of "Where in South Dakota is Brady?". We took the photos anyway - some of them are rather comical!
Sunday - The Corn Palace (Can you find him in this picture?)

Wall Drug

Monday - In the Black Hills

Wednesday - At Mount Rushmore (this one is my favorite!)

A Visit to Great Grandma Silliman's

This week Brady and I took a road trip to visit my grandma in Iowa while Andy was in Chicago on a mission trip with our high school youth group. While we were there we also visited my aunts, uncle, and my cousin, Kylee. It was a great time and I took a ton of pictures. Here are a few.
Brady loved playing with this tractor! My Uncle Rick got it when he was 3 years old and Jen and I played with it all the time when we were little.

Gram, Jerry, Kylee, and Brady enjoy swinging on a beautiful summer night.

Hanging with Shan and Shauna

This past weekend we attended a wedding for a college friend in the cities. Our great friends Shan and Shauna were there from Seattle. Here are a few our our pics from our time together.

Check out this progression. We thought this first one was hilarious!

It's all fun and games until Brady gets scared!

A Day with Aunt Jen and Uncle Jerry

We began our day today by sleeping in. Brady didn't get to bed last night until after 11:02pm - the time he was born last year, so needless to say, he slept until 9:15 this morning. Jen brought Brady in to join me in getting ready in the bathroom. Where did she plop him? In the sink of course. This was a great place for Brady to play until he discovered the facet! Luckily, Aunt Jen is fast and Brady didn't even get a drop of water on him.
After a tasty breakfast at Randy's, we headed to Sam's Club to pick up the essentials for our youth group trip to Miller Park tomorrow. This is Brady shopping with Uncle Jerry.
In the afternoon we headed to Leinie's to take the tour with Jen and Jer. Then we went to Irvine Park for Brady to see the animals and play a little. This happy grin came while he was watching the bunnies hop around in their cage.
Irvine Park has a new bear exhibit. We got to see three black bears - really great exhibit. They have added a park area in front of the cages too with these cute bear statues. Brady of course had to "ride" one of them.
After seeing all the animals we decided to let Brady play a little. The swings were by far the highlight of his day. He swung with Uncle Jerry and Daddy and giggled the entire time. I got so many great pictures I had to share a couple.
Love that smile!

The bouncing dolphin was also a big hit.
Brady has been such a trooper these last two days. Our weekend has been filled with fun, birthday excitement. Trouble is that has meant little of our regular routine. He was one tired little boy tonight, but still smiling and in the best of moods. What a sweetheart!

Brady's First Birthday!

Today is Brady's first birthday and we celebrated in style! Many family and friends joined us for the occasion and we got a beautiful day. Brady's party was a truck theme - of course, his favorite. The huge dump truck and fire truck balloons are definitely his favorite. It was a wonderful afternoon with lots of lawn games, kids playing, grilling, and good conversation.
This was Brady's bday present from mommy and daddy. A hit right away. This is a bouncing zebra that plays music. Trouble is, even with his long legs, he doesn't quite reach the ground yet!
Our happy boy, enjoying all the attention!

This is my masterpiece. My first 3D cake - a dump truck of course.

Here is the birthday boy. As we sang to him, he was all grins and LOVED the sparkler in his cake. How can you not with a 4th of July baby!?!
We stripped down to the diaper for our cake extravaganza. Brady was not shy and dug into the oreo part of the dump truck right away.

Mid way through the cake - this is our messy, but giggling boy.
The aftermath...all of mommy's hard work destroyed in a matter of minutes. Love you buddy!
